Where to Go in Singapore for Nature Lovers

Singapore is a thriving metropolis filled with skyscrapers, high-rise buildings and offices amidst apartment homes. But its also the garden city. Driving down any one of Singapore’s freeways you will soon notice the many trees and shrubbery that line the streets. Everywhere, it seems, is an open garden in Singapore. If you love nature and cities simultaneously, here’s where to go in Singapore for nature lovers…

Palau Ubin

Just a 10 minute ferry ride from the mainland, nature lovers will have love hearts pouring out their eyes when they discover Palau Ubin. This is the old Singapore you think you can only now read about. It is untouched and rustic, a complete contrast to the present day thriving metropolis that seems a world away once you step foot on Palau Ubin. Once here be sure to rent a bike and cycle around this little slice of paradise, all the while enjoying the nature that surrounds you, including a great range of wildlife.

Getting there: By public transport, take the MRT to Tanah Merah MRT Station (EW4), then board Bus No. 2 to Changi Village bus interchange. Changi Point jetty is not far from the bus interchange. From the jetty, take a bumboat ride (S$2 per adult one way) to Ubin.

MacRitchie Treetop Walk

Its easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the best attractions and places to visit in a new city are those you read about most. But after asking a local insider for some tips on where else to go in Singapore that perhaps wasn’t so well known but equally worth seeing, I wound up at the MacRitchie nature reserve – home to the treetop walk. This part of Singapore also feels a world away from the speedy taxi drivers and red traffic lights. Best of all, it’s entirely free to visit!

Getting there: To get to the treetop walk, you need to walk 4.5km from MacRitchie Reservoir or 2.5km from Venus Drive near Singapore Island Country Club. Closed on Mondays.

Supertrees

From a distance the colourful supertrees inside Gardens by the Bay look like a gleaming tourist attraction bedazzled with glittering lights. Yes, tourists love them. But you’ll be delighted to learn that the trees are in fact an eco-friendly creation. Not only are the tree structures covered in 1630,000 plants of over 200 species, but they are also built to produce solar energy!

Getting there: Via the Circle Line or Downtown line: exit at Bayfront MRT and take Exit B. Follow the Underground walkway, exit and cross the Dragonfly Bridge or Meadow Bridge to enter Gardens by the Bay.

Botanic Gardens
