My boys both have very delicate, sensitive skin. I guess they get that sensitivity from me (blasted red hair!). Unfortunately, with the sensitive skin also comes the dreaded diaper rash.
It was especially bad in the weeks after Baby R was born. I tried all of the diaper creams that were available at the store. Nothing worked. In desperation, I asked the doctor what I should do. She told me she could prescribe a medicated diaper cream (which would be expensive) or I could try making my own DIY diaper cream.
This cream is really easy to make, and it’s inexpensive too! The best part is that it actually works!
First you want to pick a container. You want this container to be big enough so that you can easily scrape the ointment out when you need it, but not too big that it is awkward to store. I really like using canning jars for this because not only are they glass and I don’t have to worry about plastic leaching chemicals into the solution, but they are also have a wide mouth and are an ideal size.
I also want to note that this ointment does tend to dry out a little faster than tubed ointments. However, all you have to do to revive any dried-out ointment is to add a little water and mix.
The reason why this diy diaper ointment works so well is that the Gold Bond works to absorb excess moisture, while the diaper cream creates a protective barrier. If you use any medicated ointments, this will also help to heal any broken skin from the diaper rash.
This ointment seriously saved us in those first few months after having Baby R. It cleared up even his worst rash in just a couple of days. If your kids have sensitive skin like mine, you will want to be sure to keep this diaper cream on hand!
