Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Shea Butter Lip Balm Review & Swatches

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Shea Butter Lip Balm ($3.99) is one of several new lip balms that the brand introduced recently to their permanent collection which tempted me because I’m a lip balm aficionado (aka obsessed lip balm user).

It’s funny as I was at Ulta recently and was shocked, surprised, and rather delighted that they had so many of the latest Shea Moisture products. Of course, I was instantly drawn to the new Shea Butter Lip Balms but the price wasn’t listed and I was having a senior moment and thought they were $8.99 each. So, I sat there for several precious minutes deciding if I really needed a nine dollar lip balm. Somewhere between my stomach rumbling demanding I go meet my best friend for dinner and my illogical just buy it side, I ended up striding to the cashier register to pay for it before I decided I didn’t need another expensive lip balm. Turns out it was $3.99 duh! Needless to say, I was all excited that the price was so sweet. I have no idea why I was set on believing it was nine bucks.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

As for my review, that’s found below.

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Shea Butter Lip Balm is a slightly uneventful lip balm if you’re expecting some sort of yummy, flavored treat for your lips. You have to admit Shea Moisture’s products smell as good as Carol’s Daughter products sometimes. So, of course, being the fragrance fan I am I don’t necessarily mind flavor or fragrance in my skincare, lip care, etc…! I had visions of their lip balms being tasty treats. Ahh, well, I only got one and it doesn’t taste like coconut, hibiscus, nor the combined. It’s actually flavorless, well, it kind of has a cardboard-like taste but definitely no coconut.

Oh well, I’m cool with that.

How’s the formula?

It’s alright. I couldn’t helping thinking much it reminded me of thick vaseline but hey, if you have chapped and dry lips it’s a yay. It’s very thick and it doesn’t squeeze out of the tube very well. You have to use a good deal of strength to get the product flowing into the slanted applicator. It takes a little work to get this one flowing.

The formula reminds me a dense vaseline with a thicker consistency that lays on top of lips and never full absorbs. It’s a little tacky but not really sticky. It might prove a nice night treatment but considering the thickness it’ll be a pain to sleep in it without getting it all over your pillow case. It kind of gave me a bad case of dry mouth. Don’t get me wrong, it felt really good on my chapped, dry lips and even softened and smoothed them. But I couldn’t helping thinking I have a hundred different lip balms that did a far better job that didn’t lay on top of my lips in such a unnatural way.

Mmmmm….!

It’s ok, not really the best lip balm I ever tried in my life but not the worst either. I think I expected something more from Shea Moisture for some reason. This was a little too thick for my tastes. Something a little less thick would go over a little bit better for me.

Have you tried these yet?
